Austin Fall Mini Sessions: Best Time of Day, Locations and How to Book
All of my sessions are short and sweet and built to capture the energy and attention of the little ones before it fades. I offer mini sessions year round because they are soooo popular so no need to wait till the holidays to book a mini session. They can be used for all kinds of milestones throughout the year. That being said, the fall is definitely the most popular time so be sure to get on my calendar early to secure a spot before they are gone.
If you’ve been meaning to get updated family photos before the holidays, this guide covers exactly what a mini session is, who they’re best for, the best time of day to shoot in Austin’s fall light, my favorite local spots, and how to book before they fill up.
What is a fall mini session?
Mini sessions are 15 minutes and take place at a single location usually stacked back to back with other sessions. The images are edited and uploaded to an online gallery within 7-10 days after your shoot. That being said… your online gallery will include on average 2 to 3 times that amount so there are lots of images for you to select from. The package includes 15 high res digital images that you can download at no additional charge. Want more than 15? No problem! Additional images start at $15 each but the price goes down the more you buy.
Who are mini sessions best for?
My mini sessions have a max of 4 subjects but not to worry, my next package up the Lifestyle session includes up to 6 subjects with the option to add more subjects if need be. The lifestyle session is short and sweet as well but provides a little more wiggle room in case we need it. Most kids, and often times parents as well, can have short attention spans.
The best time of day for fall photos in Austin
The best time for outdoor family photos in Austin is near sunrise or within an hour or two of sunset. Depending on the date that time changes. For example in early October sunrise sessions can start between 7:30-8:30am but once the clocks fall back in November they can start as early as 6:45am for morning sessions and as around 4 to 5pm for sunset sessions.
Morning minis are great for families with little ones who fade by evening: soft early light, fewer crowds at popular spots, and cooler temperatures.
I avoid scheduling in harsh midday sun; it creates squinting, heavy shadows, and blown-out highlights. Booking around golden hour is the single biggest thing that makes portraits look professional.
My favorite Austin fall photo locations
Here are a few of the spots I love for fall family sessions around Austin.
Walnut Creek: For the way the morning and evening light comes through the trees and the mix of open field and lush greenery. This park is the less crowded option so it’s great if you have dogs joining your family session.
Bull Creek: Easily accessible for people of all ages and a good mix of fall foliage plus a little bit of creekside shots always adds to the imagery. This one does get a bit congested during busy season.
Mueller Park: A good variety of landscaped lawns and open fields. It’s easily accessible as well for all ages and good place for both morning and evening light.
A quick reality check on fall color in Central Texas: we do not get New England-style foliage, so I lean on locations with warm golden grasses, evergreen texture, soft backlight, and open fields that glow at sunset. That is what gives Austin fall photos their seasonal feel.
Be sure to check out my LOCATIONS page for the full list of where I shoot.
What to wear for fall family photos
A few simple guidelines make a big difference. Coordinate, don’t match: pick a palette of two to three complementary colors rather than everyone in identical outfits. Lean into fall tones like rust, mustard, deep green, cream, denim, and warm neutrals, which photograph beautifully in golden light. Add texture and layers such as knits and cardigans. And avoid large logos or bright neons, which pull the eye away from faces.

Frequently asked questions
When should I book fall photos in Austin?
My repeat clients start securing their dates as early as late July but I get bookings all the way into the season so feel free to reach out just as soon as you can to secure a spot! The way I schedule shoots is the first person to book a date gets to pick the location so definitely a good reason to book early :)
How long is a mini session?
The standard mini session is 15 minutes and max 4 subjects. But no worries, if you have more subjects and need more wiggle room for your session then go with the Lifestyle session.
How many photos do I get?
The mini session comes with 15 edited high-resolution digital images delivered in an online gallery with the options to add more!
What if it rains?
First off, I love a good cloudy overcast day. Some of my favorite sessions have been shot on overcast days so because of this I try to hold off and wait till the last possible moment before we call it and reschedule. Anywhere from 24 hours out and as close as 2 hours out when possible. I know that the ability to wait it out and scramble last minute can be unique to each family and situation so I always communicate via text when the situation occurs so we can find what works best.
Do you help with posing?
Yes. I guide you the whole time, so you don’t need to know what to do with your hands. You just show up and I handle the rest.
Where are you located?
I’m an Austin-based family photographer serving Austin and surrounding areas and have been for almost 20 years now :)
