Meggie + Stephen

Words by// Meggie + Stephen We had managed to go through four years at Southwestern University without ever meeting, which, if you have been to SU you know, is not very easy. The week before graduation is called "Senior Week" because all of the seniors are finished with finals and cutting loose while the rest of the school hits the books. Stephen's friends decided to fulfill a promise they had made earlier in the year to go take a dip at Lake Georgetown some evening before they graduated during Senior week. After Stephen was dragged out of bed in the wee hours of the morning on frighteningly little sleep, he went to pick up his friends on campus. Simultaneously, a couple of Meggie's pledge sisters began gathering a couple of recruits to go to Lake Georgetown, and Meggie got sucked in and ended up hopping in Stephen's car with the rest of the crowd. On the walk to the lake, Stephen opened with the winning line, "So, are you a Sophomore?" And the rest is history.

Meggie went to Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, for 15 summers and fell in love with the Texas Hill Country. The problem is, Texas can get pretty hot. That is why the month of October was so appealing. Once those two general details were out of the way, and all of Meggie's close friends had blocked off the month of October for the foreseeable future, there was plenty of time for everything else--like finding a groom!

Once we decided to get hitched, the first thing we agreed on were the 3 R's--relaxed, romantic, refined. Every other detail followed from those three words.

Meggie: I am pretty sure I will always remember standing at the top of the stairs with my dad, waiting to walk down. It all hit me at once that this was it. We were all dressed up, the candles were lit, and the guests had shown up. The fact that I had a fire ant bite my toe right about then couldn't even lessen that moment.

What was your favorite part in the wedding planning process?

Stephen: The cake tasting.Meggie: Watching Stephen be more of a bridezilla than I could ever be over what the groomsmen wore in the wedding.

What was your favorite part of the day, Stephen?

Stephen: Our first dance. While four minutes has never seemed so long to me in my life, the whole experience, I think, embodied our relationship's trajectory. We put no thought beforehand into the dance and totally winged it. Afterwards, a lot of people asked how long we practiced. So apparently it went well. So just like when we met in our last week of college, or I moved to Lubbock after we'd been together for two months, or when Meggie took a job in East Texas and I had no idea where I would end up, we just trusted each other and we somehow made it work.

While we both enjoy the slightly inappropriate, yet completely catchy summer hit "Blurred Lines," we hadn't discussed the possibility of the song playing at the reception. But when we heard the band start that song, we made a bee-line to each other and started dancing and singing along. Before we knew it, people were handing us sunglasses to put on and making a circle around us to watch us boogie. It was the best impromptu moment we could have hoped for.
